Looking for new ways to help people work together to create something good?

We asked ourselves what made the difference between groups that fail and groups that succeed. The answer was profound, but simple. The 5 Powers comes out of 50 years combined learning in what makes groups work. We'd like to share it with you.

You know how it feels, don't you?

There's a big idea out there and somehow it has your name on it. Either it's your call or someone has called you to step in. There is potential, or challenge, change or transformation looming.

People are looking for answers. They're looking for some way to move through this. Maybe they are confused, concerned, overwhelmed or hopeful. Maybe there has been conflict or misunderstanding or they are reaching for something they can't yet see.

People are looking for the confidence to step in and the leadership to step up. They wish there was a stronger sense of community.

Maybe you can make a difference.

But how?

In this age of burgeoning technology, the answer is even more human focused. In this time of great complexity simple practices can create a stronger foundation.

Is it time to create the capacity for something new?

Finding answers in what already works

I've been a facilitator and group process consultant for over 30 years. I've been in and out of groups at all levels from community to corporate to governmental institutions all over the world.

The environments have been different. The cultures have been different. The resources have been different. The bottomline has always been the same:

How do we work together -- and stay together -- to make something good happen?

In my work, I've seen so many tools, so many methodologies, so many different mindsets. Sometimes they worked. Sometimes they got in the way.

When we asked the right questions, the answers were right in front of us

A series of conversations with a facilitator buddy made me think about my work from a new angle. A combined total of 50 years in groups.

We asked each other about what made the difference between failure and success in all the groups we worked with.

We also asked ourselves: What would people need to know to be successful even if they never experienced a facilitator or being facilitated?

And thinking of all my facilitator colleagues out there, I then asked myself: How can we support people to build the capacities they need to do good work together?

The answers to these questions became The 5 Powers.

What are The 5 Powers?

Let's consider the fundamental skills for work and life. These are the powers that help us connect with others, share generously from our time, resources and talents, and create the container both for creativity and for going the distance when the going gets tough.

  1. The Power of APPRECIATION: The "glue" between human beings. Appreciation creates cohesion and generous space. A space where more is possible.
  2. The Power of STORY: Story is the human superpower. It's how we make sense and meaning. And it is always going on in the background. Understanding this helps people come together.
  3. The Power of INVITATION: How we are invited is how we show up. Each of us is an invitation to something and each of us holds the power of invitation to new possibility.
  4. The Power of QUESTIONS: Authentic curiosity has the power to change things. Questions are a doorway into new perception. A powerful question creates momentum to a new outcome.
  5. The Power of HOSTING: Creating brave and hospitable spaces is a core capacity for people being able to find each other and stay together for long enough to make something good happen. Simple hosting practices make a profound difference.

THE 5 POWERS are simple practices that create leadership and community everywhere.

Everyone has the capacity to be able to learn and work with these practices. They are core to strengthening the human side of life and work. They underpin all of the other more complex tools and methodologies that make groups more effective.
